How to: Use Multimedia in Developing a Digital Portfolio in Visual Arts Classroom

The purpose of this paper is to provide conceptual framework for educators who are interested in integrating multimedia into the teaching of visual arts. It provides ways of using multimedia in developing digital portfolios in the context of art education. This paper first sets a cultural context for artmaking with multimedia. Secondly, it provides thematic project based in engaging students within life-centered issues using text, visual image, sound, movie and animation. In addition, it provides student centered learning environment where multimedia offers a well-situated, flexible, and effective tool that students can use to critically assess their learning outcomes. Finally, case examples of effective digital portfolios will also be presented to showcase artifacts of accomplishment and engagement of the art education students at Grand Valley State University, USA.
